According to Dorland's Medical Dictionary, health is a "condition of
optimum physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and
infirmities." How do we obtain health? To answer that question let's look at another
definition of health. Webster's Dictionary states that "health is a condition of
wholeness in which all the organs are functioning 100%, all the time." So, in order
to have health, or "optimum physical, mental, and social well-being," we need to
have all of our organs functioning properly all of the time.
Proper function is the key to good health. Gray's Anatomy states that "the purpose of the brain and nerve system is to control and coordinate the function of the other tissues, organs and systems in the body." The brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the nervous system keep "all of our organs functioning properly all of the time" and thus are responsible for our "optimum physical, mental, and social well-being," or health. It stands to reason that it is important to have a nervous system that is functioning properly, because if the nervous system is functioning properly so is the rest of the body.
If the proper function of the brain, spinal cord, or any part of the nervous system is interfered with, then the organs and systems will not function properly. This would result in a loss of health. A persons "physical, mental, and social well-being" is dependent upon whether or not their nervous system is free of interference. Any interference that the nervous system suffers causes a loss of overall health, and a lowered quality of life. The detrimental effects of nervous system interference include: lower resistance to disease, less vitality, less ability to handle stress, loss of ability to make proper use of exercise, sleep, and nutrition, an increased chance of injury, and pain. A person suffering from nervous system interference is not as healthy or as happy as they can be. They are not living up to their potential, and as a result, work suffers, play suffers, relationships suffer, and ultimately the victim suffers.
Nervous system interference is caused by what is called vertebral subluxation. Vertebral subluxation is when a spinal bone, or vertebra, becomes misaligned and puts pressure on or irritates a nerve exiting from the spinal cord. This pressure or irritation interferes with the function of the nervous system, causing a loss of proper function of the organs, which in turn causes a loss of "optimum physical, mental and social well-being," or health. Vertebral subluxation is the enemy of health.
Chiropractors are the only health care professionals who are trained to combat this enemy of health. Your Chiropractor spends years learning how to locate, analyze and correct vertebral subluxation. Finding and removing this cause of nerve interference is an important public service, which is only provided by the Doctor of Chiropractic. It is important that every person, whether young or old, sick or well, rich or poor, be examined by a Chiropractor for vertebral subluxation. Going through life suffering with nerve interference is unhealthy and unnecessary. Your Chirpractor can remove the nerve interference in your spine and restore the proper function of your nervous system, resulting in a healthier and happier you.
